Festival of Literature at Bishop’s Stortford College
The much-anticipated, annual Festival of Literature at Bishop’s Stortford College ran from the 1st to the 14th of February.
This year’s festival was extra special as it was the event’s 10th Anniversary as well as the 150th year of the College – it featured a community and education programme aimed specifically at children and young people.
Although some events were for pupils and parents only, there were also talks and events open to the public. Authors including historian David Starkey, chef Saira Hamilton, comedian Robin Ince and artist Jackie Morris spoke to the crowds throughout the festival and you can read reviews of their talks here*.
This year also saw the annual Bishop’s Stortford Picture Book Award winner announced. First place was claimed by Baby’s First Bank Heist by Jim Whalley and Stephen Collins following a vote by 16 local schools. Second place went to There’s A Dragon In Your Book by Tom Fletcher and Greg Abbott and Tropical Terry by Jarvis was third.
The winning entry was declared by illustrator Sarah McIntyre after an entertaining hour spent with the shortlisted authors and illustrators. According to the Bishop’s Stortford Independent*, Maggie Garrett, senior school librarian and picture book award coordinator said: “I would like to thank everyone involved and especially all those who have helped make this event happen for the last 10 years.’
‘It was lovely to see so many local primary schools return to join us for this award, made even more special with the return of our very first picture book award winner, Sarah McIntyre, for our 10th anniversary festival of literature.”
