Our history

It all started out for us more than 30 years ago. This is our story.

1989

Scott Atkinson and Gerald Pepper begin working together

It was back in the late 80s that Gerald and Scott first met, with Scott serving as his apprentice when he was 17 years old when Gerald was running the Hertford branch of CE Heath Financial Services.

1993

Simon Frost is recruited by Gerald Pepper as another apprentice

Four years down the line, Simon jumps onto the scene and joins Scott and Gerald. It was Gerald’s responsibility to train them both to become financial planners.

2001

gpfm is set up on the 12 March by Gerald Pepper

Gerald didn’t like the route national firms were going down so the business was established to provide long-term financial planning solutions with a transparent fee model.

2008

Simon and Scott decide they want to run a business together

Unlike many people during the recession, Simon and Scott decided to take a leap of faith and explore the idea of running their own firm.

2009

Simon and Scott buy gpfm from Gerald

The pair initially approached Gerald about joining gpfm and bringing their clients with them. However, Gerald was keen to retire. As a result, he proposed that they buy the business and take it forward.

2012

gpfm begin running an apprentice scheme

With Simon and Scott both starting out as apprentices themselves, it made complete sense to start their own scheme to help build a pipeline of talent.

2013

gpfm becomes Chartered on the 8 November

After a lot of hard work, the firm became Chartered and still holds this exclusive title which is only awarded to firms that meet rigorous criteria relating to professionalism and capability.

2017

Dubbed the “Ant and Dec of financial planning”, Simon and Scott were thrilled to be interviewed for this prestigious publication, demonstrating their friendship and how far they’ve come.

2020

Covid-19 forces us to adapt how we worked

As the Covid-19 situation unfolded, we had to react quickly and change the way we worked, whilst still upkeeping the highest level of service to our clients. Our office in Hertford temporarily closed, with all staff working successfully from home, and all client activity took place online or over the phone.

2022

gpfm continues to help people, one step at a time

Following a turbulent couple of years, we celebrated the return of normality. With new members of staff and a brand new website, we embraced the positive changes happening within the business and welcomed clients back to the office with open arms.
